Buddhist priest robe of embroidered yellow satin with one end gored. Int he many small squares symbolical of Buddha's mendicant days, are embroidered five-clawed dragons in couched gold, and large peony blossoms with leafy tendrils in shades of red, pink, blue, and green. The gored sections contain two peony blossoms with trailing branches. In the borders and larger dragon panels appear the universe motif, with coral, swastikas, and other symbols appearing in the waves. Loosely drawn clouds. In the end sections of the upper border, bats appear. The 'patched' character of the robe is accentuated by bindings of ivory satin which mark off the various squares. Lining of pink silk. Colors are clear, and include shades of blue, green, red, pink, yellow, mauve, and brown. Atached to center of upper border a flap with embroidered canopy to shield wearer from dragon's eyes. This robe close in design to 42.8.134. Cf. dragons, clouds, and wave areas with other K'ang Hsi robes.

Buddhist priest robe of K'ang Hsi blue k'ossu with gored end. Mnay five-clawed dragons in gold, those in the border having th symbolic universe design below. The small squares representing Buddha's mendicant days are alternately filled with gold dragons and large peony blossoms in shades of red, pink, and green. The shaped gores are filled with peony blossom and trailing tendrils. Upper border contains loose cloud forms and bats in end sections. Colors include green, red, pink, yellow, olive green , puce, mauve, yellow coral, peach and burnt orange. Compare treatment of clouds, wave border and dragons with the K'ang Hsi robes. K'ossu broken in many spots. The squared and gored areas set off with bindings of yellow satin. Lined with thin rose silk. Canopy flap with standard design, at center of upper top.

Yellow is predominant, with pieces of red, black, gold, green, blue, white, brown, and pale blue. Designs include Buddhist symbols, sacred vessels, cursive profile dragons, loose clouds, chilin, elephant, peonies, phoenix, Foo dog, and imperial five-clawed dragon in shades of blue, red, green, pink, puce, black, olive-green, yellow, and mauve. The border contains a running design of large peonies and leaves. Note some of the weaving done with peacock feathers. Lining of burnt orange damask of large cloud pattern.

Buddhist priest robe of embroiderd white satin. The patched effect of the robe representing Buddha's mendicant days, is marked off in irregular-sized panels by borders of couched gold threads.In the upper middle panel appears Buddha, with the sacred canopy over his head in the square above. In other panels are further figures of Buddha, Buddhist emblems and 102 Lohans, the figures depicted on banks of clouds. The embroidery is in satin, couched and outline stitch in shades of blue ,green, red, yellow, pink, mulberry, orange, brown, violet and tan. Many details of the figures are embroidered in seed pearl and coral beads. The border is embroidered with figures of Lohans and sprays of leaves in the colors of the field. Lining of gold-colored silk of cloud pattern. Note the jade ring and buckle attached to upper portion of lining. (This robe embroidered at soochow circa 1800. Said to have been presented to Preaching Priest of Lama Temple in Peking by Chia Ch'ing and worn at sutra-reciting ceremonies. {?accuracy as robe was re-dated to XX c.})

Robe of cherry red kesi with six large medallions on body and half-medallions on shoulders, containing the eight Buddhist symbols. Spaces between medallions filled with Buddhist symbols widely spaced. Colors include shades of blue, green, rose, olive green, pink, and yellow. Conventional border of straight, slanting lines; tight cloud forms; rolling waves in which appear swastikas, branches of coral, jui sceptres, and Taoist symbols. Below shoulders a wide band of dark blue k'ossu with Buddhist symbols and edged with a narrow band of trefoil forms, which is seperated by a band of brown and gold floral brocade from a three-inch strip of the red k'ossu with Buddhist synbols. Below are the wide, deep, shaped cuffs which are of dark blue k'ossu with Buddhist symbols and trefoil band. Edges of cuffs trimmed with the brown and gold floral brocade tipped with brown fur. Collar band of the same dark blue k'ossu as cuffs. Lining has been removeed, and coat opened up the side seams all the way. Painted details. K'ossu a firm good quality. A woman's robe?

Imperial 12-symbol robe of pale yellow satin embroidered in satin stitch and couched gold threads. Traditional universe design with nine 5-clawed dragons in gold, a field of loose, fragmentary clouds in which appear the 12 symbols, Buddhist symbols, crimson bats carrying branches of coral, jui scepters, and other auspicious emblems and good luck characters. Deep 'hurricane wave' border in which stripes break through the waves, filled with Buddhist symbols, flowers and Precious Things. Border and cuffs of reddish purple satin embroidered in satin stitch and couching with motifs of the body. Yellow satin sleeves. Robe slit at front and sides and lined with coarse yellow silk. The violet and some red colors are aniline. This robe presents an interesting variation of the Heavenly Sea border and harks back to the Yung Cheng period in its treatment. Cf. 42.8.183 and 42.8.11

Taoist priest robe with couched gold ground embroidered with silk and silk floss in satin stitch and couching. On the back the customary pagoda medallion flanked by the Sun and Moon symbols. In the field, tight, white-eyed clouds, two large dragon medallions, bats carrying various good luck emblems, white cranes, double peaches and Taoist symbols. At the bottom of the field the Heavenly Sea. The front of the robe is adorned at the shoulders with large medallions carrying frontal dragons. Beneathe each medallion is a pagoda resting on a heap of clouds. In the field, tight clouds, bats, cranes and Buddhist symbols. The borders are embroidered in couched silk twist with Buddhist symbols, dragons, carp, Precious Things, clouds and other symbols. The border sections are of fine workmanship and are undoubtedly older that the major portion of the robe itself.

In a field of sprawling white eyed clouds,the traditional 12 symbols, good luck characters, and bats carrying swastikas and the double peach. Border of slanting stripes topped by a solid band of tight clouds and billows in which appear Buddhist symbols and Precious Things. Black gauze band embroidered in petit point with motifs of the body. Wide cuffs of the same and sleeves of paler orange gauze striped horizontally in blue. Robe of plum black satin of very large size probably designed to wear over other robes for warmth. The robe is in two sections joined at the waist, and has a very full skirt, with short tucks under a broad girdle section which hangs over skirt like a short peplum. Upper body section of robe embroidered with four large 5-clawed dragons in couched gold thread; tight clouds, bats, and Buddhist symbols in shades of blue, green, lavendar and strong violet. Beneath main dragon, front and back, the wave and sacred mountain motif usually appearing in border of robes. The peplum section, which projects into a loose tab at the opening of the robe, embroidered with horizontal dragons in gold,bats, clouds,etc. It is edged with bands of brown and gold floral brocade. The skirt embroidered, back and front with two large horizontal dragons, clouds, bats, and Buddhist emblems. Beneath is sea and earth motif. Above each dragon, three medallions (12 in all) enclosing gold dragons, clouds etc. Extremely long sleeves of corded silk. Cuffs of black, embroidered satin. Neck, front, bottom and side seams edged with bands of the brown and gold brocade. Lining of thin blue silk.

Imperial robe of pale coral-colored k'ossu with nine 5-clawed dragons in gold. In ground loosely-drawn clouds, Taoist emblems, long-life characters, bats clutching a garlanded double peach in their mouths, and peonies in shades of blue, green, red, pink, and grey. Four of the ancient synbols the sun, moon, constellation, and mountains appear on this robe. Border of straight slanting stripes seperated by a line of regularly disposed, tight cloud forms from over-lapping waves among which appear Buddhist emblems, branches of coral, and to each side of sacred mountain a sprouting dragon. Border repeated on sleeve above a strip of dark blue k'ossu edged in gold and bright light blue. Collar band of the same. Robe slit at sides and with thin tobacco-brown figured in silk lining. Note nine dragons embroidered for emphasis. It is suggested that this robe belonged to the empress who had a fondness for coral. (But a man's coat?) cf. 42.8.52

Colors very crude and strong. Wide deep cuffed sleeves with a band of black silk embroidered with the medallion motifs and finished at lower edge with band of gold and black brocade. Directly below a band of the red silk separates this from the cuff, also of black silk and embroideded with the medallion motif. Collar band of the same, both edged with black and gold brocade. Robe is slit at sides, unlined but faced back with bands of the embroiedred silk. A woman's coat?

Imperial 12-symbol robe of yellow twilled silk embroidered, save for the nine 5-clawed dragons (couched gold thread) and certain of the 12 symbols, entriely in shades of blue with touches of white. The ground of the sky area is covered with a swastika fret diaper on which appear sprawling, white-eyed clouds, the 12-symbols, bats carrying swastikas, jui scepters, etc, and good luck characters. Border of unusually narrow slanting wavy stripes topped by a narrow strip of clouds tightly massed, and a double row of billows in which appear the Buddhist symbols and Precious Things. Note the unusual treatment of the wine cups. Robe slit at sides and lined with yellow damask with double jui medallions. Band and cuffs of blue-black satin embroidered in blue and gold.

Inscribed Taoist Priest't Robe of embroidered red satin. The ground of the back is completely covered with couched gold threads in an all-over running spiral pattern. On this ground, in lozenge-shaped medallions made up of loose cloud forms in couched silk threads, appear Taoist and Buddhist symbols. In the field are bats, white cranes, small pagodas in medallions, phoenix, and various characters. The round central medallion of the back carries a large pagoda and white cranes in couched silk threads. The Sun and Moon symbols appear on the shoulders. The embroidered area of the back extends over the shoulders in front, where the cloud medallions are filled with Precious Things and flanked by white cranes. Wide bottom border of pale green satin embroidered with chilin, turtles, carp, white cranes, clouds, and Taoist emblems in couched silk and gold threads. The narrow side and front borders carry dragons, clouds, and white cranes in couched silk and gold threads. Narrow strips of gold flank all borders. Colors extraordinarily rich ad soft. Canvas lining. Satin worn in places and threads loose.The inscription painted on the back lining reads'This robe was worn and displayed by the monk of the Lung-ho (Dragon Tiger) Hill in the Winter of the 11th year (1746) of the reign of the Ch'ien Lung' The robe was made for the Head of a Taoist monastery, the Chen Jen Fu ('Pope') Chang of Lung Hu Shen.

Imperial 12-symbol robe of yellow twilled silk embroidered with nine 5-clawed dragons in gold, those in profile grasping Heavenly Jewel. Ground filled with clouds, bats, and two versions of long life character, in shades of rose, blue, red, and white in satin stitch. Border of slanting, wavy stripes in tones of blue and rose and yellow topped with shallow rolling waves dotted with Taoist symbols and swastika, chiefly in satin stitch but with some areas in knot stitch. From waves rise branches of coral; miniature version of border at elbows, where sleeves continue with a section of yellow brocade of satin and raw silk and end with cuffs of embroidered blue silk bordered with a band of yellow satin. Collar and band of the same. Note tight form of clouds in this robe. Lining of thin blue silk.

Imperial robe, probably woman's, of sand colored satin embroidered with weight 5-clawed dragons, tight cloud forms, bats, Buddhist emblems and flowers in shades of pale blue, ivory, tan and soft brown. Border with shallow area of straight-edged slanting stripes topped with rolling waves dotted with large peony blossoms and swastika. Narrow cuffs, collar and band of brown satin embroidered with floral pattern in shades of blue and white in satin stitch. Embroidery on body chiefly of satin stitch, but dragons in couched gold, emblems, red flowers in border of knot stitch. Slit at sides and lined with sand-colored satin. Robe has a look of great age and is stained noticeably along back border.

Taoist Priest robe (theatrical ?) of red k'ossu weave. Design includes five large medallions containing the white crane with sacred fungus; loose clouds, phoenix, sun and moon symbols on shoulders, five-clawed gold dragons, Taoist symbols and numerous good-luck characters in shades of blue, green, pink, red, yellow, peach and violent purple. In the sleeve bands are medallions with the sacred trigrams, On the back panel a border that is conventional except for the fact the the striped area breaks through the rolling wave area in places. Tight clouds; waves scattered with large blossoms, swastikas, bats, Buddhist, and other symbols. Crane and bat border in front. Long collar band of yellow with swastika fret diaper in blue, bats, cranes, and clouds. Below , on each side, a band of white k'ossu with Foo dog on one side; dragon on other. Lining of coarse pink cotton. Taoist priest robes in k'ossu are rare.

Scattered in ground are loose clouds, bats and the double happiness sign in shades of blue, green, red, pink, violet and strong purple. Conventional border with staight slanting stripes; very tight band of small clouds; rolling waves in which appear Buddhist symbols. Olive green in border. Below border on sleeves a strip of fabric striped horozontally. Cuffs and collar band of dark blue k'ossu with the body motifs. Edging of gold and blue fretwork meander, and band of same directly below border of sleves. At arm holes, a wide band of gold and blue brocade of different pattern. Robe slit at sides, lined with yellow damask and faced on all openings with a band of the blue and gold brocade used for the cuff edging. Court robe of gold satin brocade with nine 5-clawed dragons. In the field are scattered very loose clouds, cranes, long-life characters, Buddhist and Taoist symbols. Conventional border of wavy slanting stripes(achieved by ribbing the brocade); rather deep tight clouds, cf. Kang Hsi; deeply rolling waves in which appear some Taoist emblems and some of the Eight Precious Things. Wide deep sleeves with no border and no cuff bound with double band of plain gold satin. Half collar band of gold satin; neck and opening bound with double satin band like sleeve band. The only variation from the gold tone of this robe is the area of the dragon's eyes which is ivory in tone. This may have been a woman's robe. Lining of thin tan silk of lozenge pattern.

Nine 5-clawed dragons in gold, those in profile clutching the Heavenly Jewel. Five of the ancient twelve symbols appear on this robe the sun and moon on shoulders; the axe and [double happiness (?)] on left and right breast, and over right shoulder blade the constellation in gold. Over the left shoulder blade in gold [another symbol]. In field are loose clouds, bats, Buddhist symbols, leafy branches of garlanded swastikas in shades of blue, green, red, pink, soft violet, olive green, and yellow. Conventional border of slightly wavy slanting lines in body colors; tight clouds, and rolling waves from which emerge branches of coral. Below the border on sleeve a band of dark blue k'ossu of body design, seperated from a deep cuff of the same by a narrow band of black and gold brocade which ia also used to edge cuff. Imperial k'ossu robe of K'ang Hsi (?) blue with all-over tendril pattern of gold in ground, nine five-clawed dragons. Loosely drawn clouds in shades of green, yellow, rose, and aubergine, and spaced motifs of red bats enfolding a gold character with their wings. These are supplemented by bats in yellow, white and rose. Fine border design of rolling waves sprinkled with sprays of flowers, Buddhist and Taoist symbols. From the waves emerge sprags of marcissus, pagodas, etc. Note areas where waves have been painted. Sleeves finished with a band of dark blue k'ossu decorated with universe and dragon motif, above a widely flaring cuff of the same K'ossu. Collar and front band of same k'ossu. Coat slit at sides and lined with yellow raw silk. Inscription inside front.

Imperial 12-symbol robe of Kangxi blue kesiwith nine 5-clawed dragons in gold, those in profile grasping the Heavenly Jewel. Scattered through ground are loose cloud forms, bats, the double peach, swastika, and sprays of flowers. On this robe the twelve symbols, with exception of the sun, moon, constellation, and mountains, appear ont he border, which is formed of a rather narrow area of slanting wavy stripes with rolly waves, clouds, and Buddhist and Daoist symbols. A similar border in miniature at elbows where sleeves continue with a wide band of wave and earthe designs embroidered on poor quality blue sild, and end in an embroidered cuff edged all around with band of modern gold and black brocade. Collar and front band of dark blue kesi edged with same gold and black brocade. The disposition of the twelve ancient symbols is thought to indicate an early practice. On front border appear the phoenix, dragons, and the cups; dragons, phoenix, and cups with some painting. On back border are the fire, water, weed, millet, the axe. Coat slit at sides and lined with thin blue silk. Kesi worn and patched. Color appears faded in spots, but may be soiled.
